We believe skills are transferable and passion for our mission goes a long way.PurposeThe Manager for the new storage-focused group in the Advanced Computing Systems (ACS) area at TACC will provide technical expertise and leadership to an experienced team deploying, administering and operating various storage platforms that support the various production systems. The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising staff in this new storage group as well as providing technical and organizational expertise. The ideal candidate will be an excellent problem solver, have strong communication skills, help plan future system designs and work well in a team environment.ResponsibilitiesWe are looking for talented and inspired individuals who are passionate about the mission of TACC. The successful candidate will:

  • Contribute technically to the group providing storage systems administration for HPC systems, data collections, and tape archive
  • Create and maintain documentation aligned with TACC’s workflow tracking methodology
  • Interface well with other groups/collaborate with leaders of other areas at TACC
  • Gain general knowledge of all TACC production systems, with focus on storage
  • Maintain support contracts/approve purchases/interface with vendors for storage platform design and operation
  • Manage group responsibilities; lead and mentor a group of junior and senior system administrators

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree in computer science or other science/engineering field
  • 10+ years demonstrated experience with large scale storage platforms for HPC Linux-based clustered systems
  • 2+ years of experience as a technical lead, project manager, or supervisor
  • Extensive experience running multi-petabyte parallel storage filesystems such as Lustre/GPFS/BeeGFS and knowledge of the various large-scale storage technologies such as flash and tape archives
  • Experience in Linux systems administration including system software package management, software/kernel patching/compilation, hardware diagnostics, backups, and failure-recovery procedures
  • Proficient with Bash scripting to automate system tasks, and programming scripting languages such as Perl, Python
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal/written communications skills
  • Must be diplomatic, organized and work will different customers

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge or experience with Lustre and/or GPFS, high-speed networks such as InfiniBand or OmniPath, and storage controllers and platforms from companies like IBM, DDN, HPE/Cray, and VAST
  • Experience configuring operating and maintaining HPC Linux clustered environments, configuration management and PXE based bare metal provisioning
  • High level of experience in RedHat-based operating systems and network administration
  • Familiarity with HPC resource managers and schedulers such as Slurm
  • Background in security such as HIPAA and handling of protected data
  • Hands-on experience with storage hardware and physical deployment, including cabling, power distribution and cooling
  • Experience working in an academic research environment in collaborative interdisciplinary projects with computational scientists and engineers
